Superintendent Gary Bloom announces strategic goals and metrics - 2012-13
It is my great pleasure and honor to serve as Santa Cruz City School's Superintendent, and to welcome you to our web site and the programs and people that it represents. I know of no school district in California with stronger community support or a stronger commitment to offering a rich and rigorous instructional program in academics and the arts. Santa Cruz City Schools has a lot to be proud of. We encourage the public to visit our schools and see the great things that are happening at every one of them.
The Governing Board of Santa Cruz City Schools has adopted a set of strategic goals that will guide decision making in the coming years:
- All Santa Cruz City School students will be college-ready and will successfully access post-secondary educational and career opportunities.
- SCCS students will be motivated learners who leave our system as well-rounded citizens with a broad spectrum of interests and abilities.
- We will eliminate the achievement gaps that currently exist between demographic groups within the SCCS student community.
- We will develop a highly collaborative, professional culture focused on supporting effective teaching.
- SCCS will maintain a balanced budget and efficient and effective management.
Each of these five goals is supported by a set of over forty metrics (specific measurable targets) that will be monitored for evidence of year-to-year progress. Examples of growth targets for 2012-13 include:
- A 3% increase in the percentage of high school students accepted into state colleges and universities.
- A 5% increase in the percentage of 9th graders passing Algebra 1.
- A 2% increase in the percent of 5th, 7th and 9th grade students meeting proficiency levels 5 or 6 on the 6 subtests included in the California Physical Fitness Test (PFT) .
- A 5% increase in the percentage of English Language Learners achieving a passing score on the English Language Arts portion of the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE).
- A 10% reduction in the loss of students to private and charter schools.
The success of our schools hangs upon the quality of our teachers and principals, and upon what happens in every classroom, every day. Our district office and classified staffs are here to serve parents, students and teachers in support of teaching and learning. These are financially challenging times in a State that is 47th in the nation in school staffing ratios. In these times, our single greatest resource is our people, their passionate commitment to our students, and their willingness to collaborate as professionals with one another and with our community.
