Special Education is an integral part of the public education system. It is specifically designed instruction to meet the unique needs of a child with a disability. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEAicon-outbound-link.gif) emphasizes the student's participation in the general education curriculum and expands the Individualized Education Program (IEP) team to include general education teachers. Under IDEA students who are eligible for special education have the right to a Free and Appropriate Public Education (FAPEicon-outbound-link.gif). Santa Cruz City Schools offers a full range of service options for eligible students.

Community Advisory Committee (CAC)

From Erika Zavaleta, our CAC Representative:

I am a parent representative for the district's Special Education programs.  My son is 5 years old and in kindergarten in the Westside Special Day Class.  I attend district and Local Plan Area meetings to give input and learn on behalf of of the parents of students with special education needs in Santa Cruz.  I also try to connect parents to each other and to special education resources, workshops and opportunities in the area.  Please be in touch with your comments and questions so we can keep improving our kids' and families' experiences!  I can be reached through Nina Eklof, Administrativee Secretary, at .  (Se habla espanol.)
